Health Concerns about Pet Jerky Treats
Since 2007 the USA has been investigating pet illnesses and deaths related to “jerky treats.” (Read the announcement here: http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/CVMUpdates/ucm371450.htm)
“On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has received reports concerning jerky pet treat-related illnesses involving 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. since 2007. Approximately 580 of those pets have died. FDA has conducted over 1,200 tests on jerky treats, but hasn’t been able to determine the cause of the illnesses. Now FDA is asking veterinarians and pet owners to help with the investigation”
I strongly recommend that pet owners avoid all jerky treats for their pets.
Instead, offer carrots as a treat for your dog.…they will love it and it is safe!
In Canada, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) has been keeping a log of suspected cases in Canada since 2011. To date, 63 cases have been reported to us by Canadian veterinarians in eight provinces. Until the root cause of these illness complaints can be identified, CVMA will continue to maintain a log of reported incidents.
